Discussion
In class discussion: what would you want to do for the November 17 Senior Symposium? Link
Nothing to submit. Come ready to talk. Think about a topic you care about, what visitors could understand, question, or do, what older technology or controversy it echoes, and what someone would need to understand about AI to judge it. Browse the topic list and example projects on the linked page.
In This Class
- Finish Tuesday. Pick up any LLM activity we did not complete.
- Facilitated brainstorm. Build the symposium from your proposals.
- Individual reflection (paper)
- Group synthesis. Each group should make a copy and submit to canvas.
Societal / Ethical Questions
- What does a hopeful future look like for people, other living beings, and the places we share?
- When we say “AI,” what are we referring to? A particular technology, a set of practices, an industry, or a story about the future?
- How do “AI” technologies, practices, and stories amplify, diminish, or reshape what people do and value?
- Whose values and ways of life do these socio-technical systems, and whose do they marginalize?
- What should we preserve or change as we shape the futures we want?
Connections to Course Lenses
Given what you know about how these technologies work, how might the various frameworks we have been discussing (biological, psychological, social / political, moral / ethical, and technical) help a visitor notice different dimensions of your issue?
Distinguish between claims about what is happening and judgments about what should happen. What roles do institutions and power play? What remains uncertain or needs further investigation?
Closing Reflection
Which idea from today would you most want to work on, and what would a visitor do at your piece?
Please complete the tasks listed below tonight on Thu, Oct 1.
